An unwritten Hollywood rule is that every well-thought-out and well-made film must have an antipode - a movie made exclusively for "pumping money" out of unassuming viewers. Often it exploits a sense of nostalgia or “parasitizes” on better predecessors.
Even the most popular actors and actresses, no, no, yes, and will star in a similar, frankly failed movie.
Want to find out which films were the worst in 2019? Then check out this anti-rating compiled by two well-known Western film critics, authors of Variety magazine - Peter Debrouj and Owen Gliberman.
10. Yesterday
Cinema Search: 6.94 out of 10
IMDB: 6.90 out of 10
Genre: music, fantasy, comedy
Country: Great Britain, Russia, China, Japan
Producer: Danny Boyle
Music: Daniel Pemberton
Duration: 116 minutes
Yesterday is a story about a mediocre musician Jack, who suddenly becomes super popular for only one reason: he finds himself in an alternative reality, and the Beatles band never existed in it. This means that all their songs can be performed without fear of copyright infringement claims.
And although, according to Peter Debrouj, in this boring film there is no romantic chemistry and the main character is an immature moron, the audience rating for this film is higher than that of one of the best films of the decade according to Time.
9. The sea of temptation
Cinema Search: 5.90 out of 10
IMDB: 5.30 out of 10
Genre: thriller, drama, detective
Country: UK, USA
Producer: Stephen Knight
Music: Benjamin wallfish
Duration: 106 minutes
This film with Matthew McConaughey as the captain of a fishing vessel and Anne Hathaway as his ex-wife, who seeks protection from her new husband, promises the audience an ominous and interesting riddle.
The problem of the “Sea of Temptation” lies in the fact that the riddle is not so difficult to solve, and “this is a turn” is absolutely ridiculous. This is especially annoying, given that Stephen Knight proved to be a brilliant and courageous screenwriter in such projects as "Detectives", "Taboo", "Pointy Peaks" and "Lock".
8. Lakisha
Cinema Search: not
IMDB: 1.20 out of 10
Genre: comedy
Country: USA
Producer: Jeremy Savill
Music: Brian salter
Duration: 98 minutes
After the white guy was fired from work from a bar in Detroit, where minority and woman complaints were lodged against him, he released his black woman. That is, he began to pretend to be a black radio host. Sounds like nonsense? This is because in front of you - one of the worst films of the year.
What Jeremy Savill directed should be sympathetic to ordinary white people who are now discriminated against almost more than everyone else. But instead, an “insulting, unfiltered, and completely unconvincing racial stereotype of impudent African American women.”
7. Glass
Cinema Search: 6.42 out of 10
IMDB: 6.70 out of 10
Genre: thriller, drama, fiction
Country: USA, China
Producer: M. Night Shyamalan
Music: West Dylan Thordson
Duration: 129 minutes
The 2017 split showed that director M. Night Shyamalan is still “maybe, knows how, practices good cinema.” It was, in fact, a continuation of his 2000 amazing film “Invulnerable.” However, Glass, the final part of the trilogy, greatly disappointed viewers and critics.
Those who dare to see this picture will have more than two hours of “a widely publicized confrontation between the two ends of a shallow puddle,” as Peter Debrouch called the movie.
“Ultimately, Glass suffers from problems with pace, consistency and plot,” echoed Samir Amer from the Pakistani edition of The Express Tribune.
But the critic of FilmGamed spoke most categorically about this uninteresting film. He called Shyamalan’s creation “a carriage of dramatic trash that constantly moves on rails to reach a place where no one ever wanted to go.”
6. Dumbo
Cinema Search: 6.76 out of 10
IMDB: 6.30 out of 10
Genre: fantasy, family
Country: USA, UK, Australia, Canada
Producer: Tim Burton
Music: Danny Elfman
Duration: 112 minutes
It was this film that Peter Debrouge put the first in his anti-rating of the most unsuccessful films of 2019. But we still have a selection from Gliberman in which there are no less “worthy” specimens.
An attempt to make what is happening in the films as realistic as possible does not always correspond to the appearance and sensations that made the originals so attractive. An example is the new "Lion King" by John Favreau.
Tim Burton - no doubt a talented director - this time created a bizarre cinematic carnival in which violent characters mock a virtual animal. For this tricky story to work, viewers must believe that this huge, ridiculous creature can actually fly.
Interestingly, Dumbo by rating on KinoPoisk is among the top 10 films of 2019.
5. The Curse of Annabelle 3
Cinema Search: 5.91 out of 10
IMDB: 5.90 out of 10
Genre: horror, thriller, detective
Country: USA
Producer: Gary Doberman
Music: Joseph Bishara
Duration: 106 minutes
In earlier times, it would be a creepy thriller about a demonic doll that comes to life and kills people.
But since the third part of Annabelle is an offshoot of the Spell universe and must adhere to the mysterious rules and regulations of this franchise, this story is about a doll that doesn’t really come to life. She simply directs evil spirits so that the main characters can fight them. They do it not too interesting, and only the fact that only half of the film has passed can scare the audience.
4. Rocketman
Cinema Search: 7.03 out of 10
IMDB: 7.40 out of 10
Genre: biography, musical, drama
Country: Great Britain, Canada, USA
Producer: Dexter fletcher
Music: Matthew Margeson
Duration: 121 minutes
In this case, the opinion of the critic and the audience clearly does not coincide, as can be seen from the high user ratings on KinoPoisk and IMDB.
Gliberman was indignant at the sloppy chronology of Elton John’s career, the cliché congestion, and the submission of musical numbers in Rocketman.
“Should we forgive all this simply because Elton’s songs are timeless?” The critic asks the reader a rhetorical question.
3. Once upon a time ... in Hollywood
Cinema Search: 7.65 out of 10
IMDB: 7.90 out of 10
Genre: drama, comedy
Country: USA, UK, China
Producer: Quentin Tarantino
Music: Ennio Morricone
Duration: 161 minutes
Are you also surprised to see this movie in the top ten? And all because Owen Gliberman did not like the idea of completely “rewriting” the history of the crimes of Charles Manson and what they did to our collective consciousness.
This, according to the critic, is an amazingly monstrous idea, and after watching "Once ... in Hollywood," he felt betrayed.
2. Christmas for two
Cinema Search: 6.96 out of 10
IMDB: 6.60 out of 10
Genre: drama, comedy, romance
Country: USA, UK
Producer: Paul Fig
Music: Theodore Shapiro
Duration: 103 minutes
This is a romantic comedy in which Emilia Clarke plays a lonely woman, similar to Bridget Jones (but without her charm), and Henry Golding - a too nice and old-fashioned guy.
The script, written by Emma Thompson in collaboration with Greg Wise, is based on the song of the same name by the British group Wham! And if you know her, then this film has nothing to surprise you with. However, if you do not know - too.
1. Men in Black: International
Cinema Search: 5.83 out of 10
IMDB: 5.70 out of 10
Genre: fiction, action, comedy
Country: USA
Producer: F. Gary Gray
Music: Chris P. Bacon, Danny Elfman
Duration: 114 minutes
There are many words to describe the failed reboot of the once-popular franchise. We can say that “Men in Black: International” is a boring, soulless and creatively bankrupt movie. And most importantly - it makes viewers ask two questions:
- Why does this movie exist?
- Why am I watching this?
The People in Black series from the very beginning was a non-standard project, which kept afloat mainly on the charismatic duet of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. As soon as they were taken out of the equation, replacing the “next generation” of hipster special agents (in this case, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson), the audience was left face to face with holes in the plot, flat jokes and terrifying predictability.
